Chiropractic care during pregnancy in Munich

During pregnancy, many women experience back pain, tension in the pelvic area, and changes in posture. Gentle chiropractic care can help alleviate these symptoms and support the body as it adapts to pregnancy.

At American Chiropractic Haus in Munich-Bogenhausen, our chiropractors offer safe and gentle chiropractic care for pregnant women. Using special techniques tailored to pregnancy, we help improve spinal mobility, relieve tension, and promote a healthy pregnancy.

Many patients come to us for pregnancy-related complaints such as back pain, pelvic pain, sciatica, and tension in the neck or shoulders.

Pregnancy changes everything — including your body. As your baby grows, your centre of gravity shifts, your spine takes on new loads, your pelvis widens through hormonal ligament relaxation, and your posture adapts week by week. Back pain, pelvic girdle pain, sciatica and neck pain are common companions of these changes. Many pregnant women accept this pain as inevitable.

It isn't.

Why chiropractic can help during pregnancy

During pregnancy, the body changes rapidly. As the baby grows, the center of gravity shifts, and the pelvis adapts to support the growing child. These changes often lead to:

  • Lower back pain

  • Pelvic pain

  • Sciatica symptoms

  • Tension in the neck and shoulder area

Chiropractic treatments help restore mobility to the spine and pelvis so that the nervous system can function optimally. Gentle chiropractic adjustments can reduce pressure on joints and nerves and help many pregnant patients feel more comfortable throughout their pregnancy.

For women in Munich who suffer from pregnancy-related back pain, chiropractic treatment can be a natural, drug-free option.

Is chiropractic safe during pregnancy?

This is the question we ask ourselves with every patient — and the answer is clear: yes, chiropractic treatment is safe in all trimesters of pregnancy when performed by experienced, specialised practitioners.

At our clinic in Munich, we use specially adapted positioning techniques and treatment methods developed exclusively for pregnant patients. Your bump is never put under pressure. There are no sudden forceful movements. Instead, we use gentle, precise pressure — individually tailored to your trimester, your symptoms, and your physical condition.

The Webster Technique is one of the best-known chiropractic methods specifically for pregnant women. It focuses on optimal pelvic alignment and relaxation of the surrounding ligaments and muscles. A balanced pelvis supports your baby's natural development and can significantly relieve typical pregnancy complaints.

What Conditions Do We Treat During Pregnancy?

The most common complaints that bring pregnant patients to our Munich practice:

Back pain during pregnancy often develops as your changing posture loads the lumbar spine unevenly. Targeted adjustments and postural guidance help reduce this strain throughout your pregnancy.

Pelvic girdle pain and symphysis dysfunction are particularly common in the second and third trimester. Hormonally driven ligament relaxation can cause instability and strong pain when walking, climbing stairs, or turning over in bed. Chiropractic care can stabilise the pelvis and relieve discomfort.

Sciatica during pregnancy — when the sciatic nerve is irritated by the changing pelvis or the growing uterus, shooting pain into the buttock and leg can follow. Gentle mobilisation techniques can often significantly reduce nerve pressure.

Pelvic floor pain is frequently overlooked during pregnancy. Stabbing, pressing or pulling sensations in the pelvic floor area can have several causes: pelvic instability, muscle tension, or hormonal changes. We examine specifically what is driving the symptoms.

Neck pain and headaches increase in pregnancy due to changing sleep positions, hormonal fluctuations, and the additional strain on the cervical spine as your body weight changes.

What does a chiropractic treatment session involve during pregnancy?

Your first appointment begins with a thorough consultation and examination. Your chiropractor will assess your posture, the mobility of your spine, and the alignment of your pelvis.

Treatment during pregnancy involves very gentle chiropractic techniques that have been specifically developed for pregnant patients. The goal is to restore healthy mobility to the spine and pelvis while ensuring maximum comfort.

Many patients report immediate relief from tension or improved mobility after treatment.

Our team in Munich-Bogenhausen has experience treating pregnant patients and tailors care to each stage of pregnancy.

Chiropractic After Birth — Recovery and Rehabilitation

Your body needs time and support after birth. Whether after a natural delivery or caesarean section — many complaints that developed during pregnancy do not automatically disappear after delivery. Pelvic girdle pain, back pain and pelvic floor symptoms can persist for weeks or months.

Postnatal chiropractic treatment supports your body in returning to its natural balance more quickly. We treat the spine, pelvis and surrounding musculature — and work closely with midwives and physiotherapists where comprehensive postnatal rehabilitation is appropriate.

Diastasis recti — the separation of the abdominal muscles after birth — can also be supported chiropractically, in combination with targeted core stabilisation exercises.

When Should I See a Chiropractor During Pregnancy?

As early as possible—and as often as needed. Typical recommendations of monthly visits in the first two trimesters, followed by visits every two weeks in the third trimester is normal and helps your chiropractor prepare your body for birth.

Many of our patients come in as early as the first trimester, when the first symptoms of pelvic floor changes appear. Others don’t come until the third trimester, when their back starts to ache under the weight of their belly. Both approaches are fine.

A special note: for patients who have pre-existing complications such a scoliosis, hyperflexibility disorders, or other conditions may experience different or worsening symptoms during pregnancy. These patients may also need more frequent care that meets their needs. Early interventions are most helpful. We recommend that you inform us of any existing pregnancy complications or medical restrictions so that we can adjust the treatment accordingly.

A referral from an OB-GYN or primary care physician is not required.

FAQ — Common Questions About Chiropractic Care in Pregnancy

Can you go to a chiropractor when pregnant? Yes. Chiropractic treatment is possible and safe in all trimesters of pregnancy when performed by experienced practitioners. At our Munich practice, all practitioners are trained in prenatal care and use exclusively pregnancy-appropriate techniques.

Is visiting a chiropractor during pregnancy safe? Yes — with the right technique and experienced practitioners. There is no evidence that chiropractic treatment poses risks in uncomplicated pregnancies. On the contrary, multiple studies show positive effects on pelvic pain and back complaints during pregnancy.

What painkillers are safe during pregnancy? This should always be discussed with your gynaecologist or midwife. Chiropractic care offers a drug-free alternative for pain relief — with no risk to your unborn baby.

How much does chiropractic care cost during pregnancy — and does health insurance cover it? German statutory health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenkasse) does not typically cover chiropractic treatment. Our prices are listed on our pricing page. Many private supplementary insurance plans do cover chiropractic — check with your provider.

Can chiropractic help with a breech baby? The Webster Technique is recommended by some midwives and gynaecologists when a baby is in breech position. It focuses on optimal pelvic alignment and ligament relaxation — potentially giving the baby more room to turn. There are no guarantees, but many of our patients report positive experiences.

When should I tell my chiropractor I'm pregnant? Immediately — and before every treatment. We adapt our techniques and positioning from the first trimester onward. Please also inform us of any pregnancy complications or medical guidance you have received.
