Chiropractors are medical professionals trained in correcting muscular and skeletal dysfunctions. That means they are a hands-on therapist, who uses a variety of manual therapy techniques to locate and correct biomechanical problems that cause pain, but their main tool is the adjustment.
How does an adjustment help your health?
Biomechanical problems require biomechanical solutions. Blockages of the joints affect the fascia and muscles surrounding that area, which, when left uncorrected, cause dysfunctional movement and pain. Chiropractic uses a gentle impulse through the joint called an adjustment to improve the range of motion of that joint because when you move better, you heal faster.
How should I feel after the first adjustment?
It's not uncommon to feel some changes in your body after your first treatment, sometimes immediately! While most people feel more mobile directly after an adjustment, others require specific follow-up protocols, like exercises or heat therapy. Some types of treatment might leave you feeling tired or sore, and others might activate certain muscles and respond best to a workout directly after. Depending on your specific case, your chiropractor will give you a follow-up plan designed to help you recover best.
How long does treatment take?
Similar to seeing a physiotherapist or an osteopath, treatment takes time. Your treatment plan is dictated by your specific case, your body's condition, and how you react to treatment. A typical treatment plan for acute pain usually lasts between 4 and 6 visits, but chronic pain patients may need a bit longer. Children, for example, tend to respond rather quickly and may only need a single treatment! Conversely, conditions like chronic headaches or scoliosis might take regular treatment throughout your life. Simply put: it depends.
A Chiropractor's intention is to improve your body's movement so that you heal faster. Joints that move freely get out of pain faster, too. Muscles that function normally move lymph (supporting your immune function), improve blood flow, and keep you moving without pain. No drugs or injections necessary.
You have everything within you to heal yourself, but chiropractic can help you heal faster.
